SHAMBAUGH, IA (PAGE County) Founded: 1881 Founders: Mr. & Mrs. James Shambaugh Named for: James Shambaugh, the founder Post Office: 1880-Present Incorporated: 1903 1910 Population: 245 Location: Section 36 of Harlan Township A plat was drafted in 1878 for the community, but no lots were offered for sale until 1881. A store owned by Bracken and McLean began operations in 1878 but it took the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad laying tracks near the proposed comment to generate further interest. The post office near Shambaugh was originally called Nodaway Mills. It operated from 1870-1880 when it was moved to the new community. Another mill--Shambaugh's Mill operated in the area as well. Shambaugh was home to many Mennonite settlers during its early years.
